From now until December 1, 2010, you will be working on these two webquests: Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. Walt Whitman is a group project whereas each student is responsible individually for Emily Dickinson. Each webquest is worth 100 points.

Your group should not have more than 3-4 people - do not ask me if you can have a 5th or 6th period as I will simply say "no."

2. What words and phrases indicate Whitman’s empathy with heroic people?
"Each singing what belongs to him or her and to no one else." "The day what belongs to the their melodious songs."
3. If you could choose a modern American hero to add to Whitman’s poem, “I Hear America Singing,” Who would you choose and why?
We would choose elderly people because they have knowledge that others cannot find everyday. They are gentle & heroes in the sense that they do not ask for or want much, but they do so much to help someone.
4. What do you believe is Whitman’s concept of heroism?
Whitman’s concept of heroism is people who are ordinary and just uphold the classic beauty of simplicity. His idea of heroism is also those people who can own what is rightfully theirs.
5. Throughout “Song of Myself,” Whitman uses the pronoun “I” in order to empathize with people. What effect does this use of the first person have on the reader?
The reader feels more connected to the subject of nature. The reader probally knows how it feels to be distracted by materials and other whimsical things in life.
6. How would Whitman celebrate the cultural diversity found in America today?
He would celebrate cultural diversity found today in america with his writing still. But, he would probably use more than just “nature” and just the discussion of simplicity. We think that he would actually describe cultures and the essence of people.
7. What landscapes do you feel Whitman would praise today?
The landscapes Whitman would praise today would still be those of nature. He would praise things like trees, mountains, and other outdoor things.
8. What sound devices would be reminiscent of Whitman’s style to describe these landscapes?
The sound devices that would be reminiscent of Whitman’s style to describe these landscapes are repetition and alliteration, consonance, and assonance. These devices help to get his point of the simplicity of nature across.
9. Do you think Whitman would sing the praises of technology? Explain.
We don’t think that Whitman’s would sing the praises of the technology because that idea goes against everything he stands for as far as simplicity goes. He believed that simplicity would help life to be so much easier and that technology was just another distraction.

ReplyDelete2) The words and phrases indicated by Whitman's empathy for heroic people are "keep your face always to the sunshine, and shadows will always fall behind you." in this quote he states that if you keep you head up that things will stay positive and the negative things will stay out of your way. By being positive you can be heroic to your own self and to lead by example to others.

ReplyDelete3) If I could add an American hero to Whitman's poem "I hear America Singing." It would be Superman... I picked Superman because as Americans we make up fictional heros to look up to instead of looking for an actual human to look up to. Children look up to fictional characters because the world creates false identities for people to idolize instead of a historical figure.

ReplyDelete4) We believe that Whitman's sense of heroism is that every man has the opportunity to be a true hero. He believes that each person can be a hero by helping people in the smallest of ways. If everyone helped someone in the world... we would be in a world full of heros.

ReplyDelete5) The poem "Song of Myself", Walt Whitman uses the pronoun "I" because it helps the reader personify with themselves, as if they wrote the words they're reading. It helps the reader imagine what Whitman is saying and apply it to their experiences.
